Unique Sports Counselling seeks to provide a quality sports counselling service to both current and former professional sportsmen and sportswomen whilst at the same time retaining a commitment to those competing at “Grassroots level, which, after all is where all those who become professionals begin their sporting journeys.
Rio Ferdinand’s comments below serve to illustrate that playing for one of the world’s richest clubs does not exempt the international sportsman from those unexpected things that the sporting world can throw at you. What is more when the unexpected does happen that player’s elevated status with all the expectations that go with it means the media spotlight is all the more intense.
“Having been innocently banned from football, it was good to talk to a friend to express those feelings. You only realize how important a facility USC offers, when circumstances happen. From the position that I am coming from, the pressure for the modern day footballer, you need something like this in place.”
Rio Ferdinand (Man.Utd&England)
It is part of Unique Sports Counselling’s core values that we maintain our contribution to the grass roots. We assist various state schools, and work with young offenders and appropriate voluntary sector organizations, such as the Charlton Athletic FC, “drop in” centre based in Gravesend, where young people confront issues such as bullying, depression, and low self-esteem. Transforming a negative attitude into a positive future is the purpose of Unique Sports Counselling.
“Co-ordinating an extensive social inclusion programme requires having access to services that have an absolute and measurable effect on that target group. Mickey’s credibility and professional approach have added a new dimension to my programme, giving a depth of service that allows consistency and facilitates ultimate quality.”
Alan Dennington – Charlton Athletic Community Scheme
The recent appointment to Charlton Athleticladies football teams has been a significant step in promoting this specialized work. As part of our ongoing development Unique Sports Counselling continues to keep under review appropriate partnership opportunities such as Tony Adams’ highly acclaimed Sporting Chance Clinic.
We are delighted to have secured the services of Mickey Bennett to enhance our women’s and girls football programme. Mickey provides a much-needed outlet that is made available to over 130 of our players. As a former Charlton player, his insights and understanding of the lifestyle and difficulties that young players face makes him an ideal candidate to provide counselling services to our programme.”
Deb Browne (General manager, Women’s and Girls Football – Charlton Athletic FC)
